But knowing how to canoe is one thing - knowing how best to store the canoe is entirely another. To ensure your continued enjoyment of canoeing, you must store your canoe properly. How you handle the storage of your canoe will determine its functional lifespan. When thinking of storage, the major natural elements that can cause damage and that you must bear in mind are the water, the sun and extreme weather.

Salt water is an abrasive that can cause damage to the hull of the canoe by corroding the metal parts. Before storing your canoe, you should rinse it out completely with fresh water to wash out any remnants of salty water. Ensure that you also get rid of the sand particles from the planks and canvas using a soft cloth and a mild detergent; acetone can be applied to deal with tough stains.

After this, place the canoe in an upright position to drain out all the water. Once it's dry check for chips or dents on the hull surface, inspecting the gunnels and deck plates as well. Repair any damage immediately, to prevent a small problem becoming a bigger one later.

Never store your canoe out in the elements, even if it's just for drying purposes. Most canoes are made from material that deteriorates under excessive exposure to sunlight, rain, wind and snow.

Cleaning Tips - Cleaning a Concrete Garage Floor

Cleaning your concrete garage floor can be a daunting task especially when you think about the types of stains that often dot garage floors. To avoid permanent stains on your concrete floor you should clean it regularly - but sometimes even this won't help with stains as stubborn as oil, grease and paint. It follows therefore that the methods you use to clean the floor should be in tandem with the types of stains that dot your garage floor.

The materials you may need to facilitate a comprehensive floor cleaning are kitty litter, concrete cleaner, dish washing cleaner, a brush or broom with stiff bristles, a power-hose, squeegee and protective clothing (gloves and goggles).

The first rule of cleaning concrete is speed - most concrete stains can be prevented from holding fast by taking swift action. Immediately wiping off the stain will take care of the stains of many liquids. However, for substances like oil or grease, cover the area with kitty litter for 24hours so that most of the spill is absorbed.

Before you start cleaning, open the garage door and remove all items from the floor before sweeping it clean. Most concrete cleaners are designed to deal with tough stains. But before using the cleaner for the entire floor, do a spot test to see if it removes the stain or creates another. Note though that some stains do not necessarily require concrete cleaners - such stains can easily be removed using a regular dish cleaner.

Place the cleaner on the stain and let it sit for a while - how long you leave it will depend on how stubborn the stain is. Then scrub it clean with the broom or brush before rinsing the floor with the high-powered hose and drying it with the squeegee.

Does the Garage Need a Window?

Whether you really need a garage door window will depend on your style preference. But there is no doubt that having one can improve the aesthetic value of your home while also serving as a great way to allow light into the garage. If you must have a window, it is always best that you go for a design that is similar to the others in your house. That said, before choosing the type that is best for you, you should take a number of factors into consideration while critically weighing the pros and cons.

The first thing you must consider is the purpose of your garage and how adding windows will improve it. For example, if you use the garage as a game room, nursery or workshop, additional windows will increase the natural light that filters into the room. This will also determine the type of glass you use.

Remember though, that installing windows means there is two-way vision - if you can see outside it is likely that those that are outside can see in. So even if the pro here is natural lighting, the con is less privacy. Nevertheless, if you still want more natural light but desire privacy, you can opt for stained glass, frosted or tinted.

If you live in a cold area or a region with particularly cold winters, you should carefully consider installing garage door windows because glass holds in more heat than other surfaces. You could even use insulated glass for best heat retention.
